Small business energy savings

Overcoming the challenges faced by small businesses

Small businesses need programs designed to meet their unique needs
It can be difficult to fully capture energy savings within the small business market segment due to high costs for both sellers and buyers of efficiency measures. Benefits are also often split between the building owner and the tenant.

To overcome these challenges, KEMA has designed an innovative and cost-effective approach to reach the small business market for lighting, HVAC, and refrigeration retrofits.

Capturing small business energy savings requires program efficiencies

KEMA’s small business program concept relies on an intuitive web-based application used by approved lighting and refrigeration contractors who develop project proposals in a low-cost manner.  These proposals often provide the potential investor with a project that will pay back in one year or less.

Our streamlined approach keeps program marketing costs low by largely relying on door-to-door canvassing, which in turn allows higher incentives than typical energy efficiency programs.  The canvassing, energy audit, and proposal generation process is combined in a single step and performed by approved contractors.

Our program software generates proposals for the customer, which allow our technical staff to control what retrofit options are offered and the associated claims made regarding annual energy savings and light level changes. KEMA experts also provide quality control via inspections and facilitate effective communication with the small business customers.

KEMA currently provides this small business program to clients in California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico, among other locations.
